  • First time using EarthNC on iPhone 4 with waterproof case

  • Cast-off 06:40 to catch flood current, ice on deck, outboard fired right up
  • Motored to entrance of North side of Desdemona Sands
    • Encountered 2-4ft swells between Ilwaco entrance and SW end of Sand Island, spray over bow
    • Short full stop while we investigated stuck dock line under boat, turned out to be hooked on bow cleat and running under keel, easily fixed

February 2011

  • After Gary canceled racing on Sunday, we quickly drove to Ilwaco and left the dock around 15:30.
  • Since I didn't have my handheld VHF, and one must never go out lacking a VHF, I jury rigged a makeshift antenna out of AC extension cord to my fixed VHF. Worked good enough for coastal sailing – was able to receive WX channels loud and clear.
  • Motored out to just South of Sand Ilsand and raised sail. Winds were ~10kn with 4ft swells, gray clouds no rain.
  • Cursed mainsail again. Top of the replacement list.
  • Headed in at 17:00, constant rain soaked us.
  • Mistakes
    • misjudged the strength of the wind leaving the dock and spun around the piling – should have backed out the other direction and rotated the boat 180 once out of the slip.
    • did not check the jackline on the bow which was not fastened and tightened around the front hatch
  • 2 hrs on Outboard

March 2011

2011-03-06, Doug, Nick

  • Cast off at 10:30
  • Sailed out towards the ocean
  • With light winds in the morning and calm bar conditions, we hung out in the bar around Buoy 8 when winds picked up around 13:00
  • Sailed West between buy 3 & 4 before heading in under sail, we used the genoa and full main
    • There was a lot of weather helm which could be caused by too much main. Will try reefing or feathering next time.
  • With the current picking up around 15:30 I kept us under sail to see how we would fair against the current. This quickly turned into a situation where the motor needed to be fired up as the ebb began.
  • Current was heavy and tricky going into the Ilwaco entrance and 1000ft after.
  • 3 hrs on Outboard

2011-03-20, Julia
